Ingredients You Need
To make these sandwiches for kids, you’ll need these ingredients:
- Soft white or wheat bread: I prefer to use soft sliced bread here, rather than a more rustic artisanal bread, since it is easier to cut with cookie cutters. And it is softer to bite into as a tea sandwich.
- Fillings: Choose from cream cheese, thinly sliced cucumber, hard-cooked egg, peanut butter and jelly, lemon curd, soft goat cheese, and more.
TIP: I cut out the bread with round cookie cutters to make a fun shape, but you can simply cut into squares or triangles and leave the crusts on.

Best Tea Party Food
We love the idea of having a tea party for kids, and these are some of the foods that would be great to include (along with the tea set).
- Tea sandwiches
- Fresh fruit like berries or grapes
- Cookies (such as simple Sugar Cookies)
- Cupcakes (such as simple Vanilla Cupcakes)
- Tea or juice
Tea for Kids
When considering tea for kids, you’ll want to avoid anything with caffeine and focus on herbal options. Ones that we like that are both caffeine-free and delicious include rooibos and chamomile. We often stir honey into warm water to make “honey tea,” too.
How to Store
Tea sandwiches are best served on the day they are made to ensure the bread is fresh and soft. You can make them up to 24 hours ahead, but wrap tightly with plastic wrap to ensure freshness and store in the fridge.
Best Tips for Success
- Use soft wheat or white bread for these finger sandwiches.
- Choose one flavor to make or include a mix.
- Use sunflower butter in place of the peanut butter if there are allergy concerns, or use just jam.
- Save any leftover crusts for Baked French Toast.
- Use a round cookie cutter to make the round sandwiches, or use the full slices of bread and simply cut into quarters or triangles.
